SELECTION TASK

SECTION A - GRAMMAR

Study the following examples of spoken mistakes made by learners of English. Identify the error in each case. Why was the mistake made? What does the student not know?

Example:

Rosa: I've gone to bed at 11 o'clock last night.

This should read "I went to bed at 11 o'clock last night."
The student does not know that the present perfect form is not used to talk about specific times in the past. In this case the simple past is required.

1. Olga: Let's go down the pub this evening for a drink.
Rosa: I'd love to but I'll see "Macbeth" at the theatre Royal.

2. Olga: My car's giving me some trouble again. Can you pick me up on the way to school tomorrow?
Rosa: I'm sorry, I can't pick up you.

3. Rosa: He's getting up at 8 o'clock every morning.

4. Olga: What does she look like?
Rosa: She looks like intelligent.

SECTION B - VOCABULARY

Learners quite often confuse words in English. Clarify the difference in meaning between the following pairs of words, which are often confused.

Example:

Rob / Steal

They robbed the bank. They stole the money.
You "rob" a person or place. You steal money and objects / possessions.
So "rob" means to take something from someone or somewhere.

1. practice / practise

2. their / there

3. comprehensive / understanding

4. lend / borrow

5. sensible / sensitive

SECTION C - PRONUNCIATION

Comment on why you think learners of English might have difficulty with the pronunciation of these words. It might help to say them aloud.

Example:

City, Comedy

The 'c' in city is pronounced as an /s/ sound whereas in comedy it is pronounced as a /k/ sound.

1. cough, through

2. knee, gnat

3. comb, lamb

4. woman, women

5. history, historical
